Here’s what the most recent data tells us:
– Chlamydia cases increased, with over 109,000 diagnoses statewide in 2023 — a 5.4% rise from the previous year.
– Gonorrhea continues to affect thousands, with rates remaining above national averages.
– Syphilis, including congenital syphilis, is a growing concern despite slight decreases in some categories.
– Young people ages 15–24 continue to be the most affected age group.
– Non-Hispanic Black New Yorkers and MSM face higher rates than other groups.
Why These Groups?
The disparities are not random. They are tied to long-standing inequities:
– Young adults may lack confidential, affordable testing options.
– Non-Hispanic Black communities often face systemic barriers in healthcare access and education.
– MSM populations experience stigma and discrimination that can keep people from getting tested or treated.

These statewide numbers reflect what we see on Long Island as well. Communities of color, young people navigating independence, and LGBTQ+ individuals are experiencing higher risks and fewer resources. The disparities we see are a reminder that sexual health is not just a personal issue — it’s a community issue.
