Hello SHC Blog

When it comes to protecting your health, knowledge truly is power. That’s why New York State has taken a bold step forward in making HIV testing more accessible and stigma-free. Through ongoing initiatives, the state is providing free, at-home HIV self-testing kits by mail, including special distribution during National HIV Testing Day in June 2025. This effort is about more than convenience—it’s about breaking down barriers to care and empowering every person to know their status.
Why Self-Testing Matters
HIV is most treatable when caught early. Early diagnosis means you can begin treatment right away, protecting both your health and your loved ones. Yet, stigma, lack of access, or fear of being “seen” at a clinic keeps many people from testing regularly. Free at-home self-testing changes that narrative. You can test privately, on your own schedule, without leaving your home.
How to Get a Free Kit
New York State residents can request a free HIV self-test kit discreetly through state health department programs. These kits are mailed in plain packaging for confidentiality. On National HIV Testing Day (June 27, 2025), additional kits will be made available to encourage widespread testing.
What to Do After Testing
- If your result is negative: Great! But remember—testing should be routine. Regular testing helps you stay in control of your health. You should also consider HIV prevention tools – condoms, PrEP medication, etc.
- If your result is positive: Don’t panic. HIV today is treatable, and with early treatment, you can live a long and healthy life. The most important step is to connect with a trusted provider immediately to confirm your results and begin treatment.
At Simple Healthcare, we’re here for you every step of the way. If you’re unsure how to interpret your results, or if you test positive, you don’t have to navigate the process alone. We offer:
- Telehealth visits so you can speak with a provider without leaving your house.
